CAPA Trainings

The China American Psychoanalytic Alliance (CAPA) provides Chinese mental health professionals with a long-term, continuous, systematic psychodynamic psychotherapy training program where students engage in a triad of learning experiences: coursework, individual supervision, and current patient experience.  CAPA is an opportunity to transform your practice, build on your already established background and foundation, and deepen your patients’ experiences in treatment.

By design, CAPA’s training model differs from intensive trainings by allowing professional transformation and development to unfold over time with the continued support of teachers and individual supervisors from all over the world.  At CAPA, students apply what they are learning through coursework and individual supervision in real time with their patients.

Studying at CAPA begins with the two-year Basic Training Program which provides a foundation in psychodynamic psychotherapy. Further professional transformation and development unfold with the continuation into the Advanced Training Program, another two-year training experience that further builds on the foundation provided by the Basic Training.

As mental health careers continue to develop in China, many students find CAPA’s one-year elective programs to be of great interest and importance.  CAPA offers a Supervision Training Program to graduates of both Basic and Advanced Trainings that further enhances their professional paths.  CAPA’s Infant Observation program, although currently on hiatus, can provide vital insights about human development.

Training with CAPA can also be an important step on the road to becoming a qualified candidate for analytic training, and many CAPA graduates have attended analytic training virtually and in person at analytic institutes in the U.S.A. and around the world.

Along with the transformative training experience at CAPA, students are also provided with a support system as well as opportunities to explore cross-cultural connections and additional seminars and workshops in areas of special interest.

Not only does CAPA’s learning environment led to collegial relationships, but there is also a network of like-minded professionals to connect with through CIC (CAPA in China).  CIC has groups in different cities that were developed for CAPA students and alumni to support each other.  Most notably is the bi-annual academic conference held by CIC.

Through activities such as Movie Club and Special Lecture Series cross-cultural interactive experiences are shared.  CAPA’s newsletter and the Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in China journal are also ways to connect with the CAPA community.  And if paying it forward means something to you, CAPA offers the Teacher Apprenticeship Program to support becoming the next generation of teachers and leaders in this field.
