The China American Psychoanalytic Alliance Inc., (CAPA) a nonprofit organization, was established in 2006 to promote psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychotherapy training in China. American (and also Australian and Canadian) members of CAPA are treating patients and supervising mental health professionals in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Wuhan and Xi’an. Six two-year psychoanalytic psychotherapy training programs began in September 2008.
CAPA Membership
At present (November 2008) there are more than one hundred eighty dues-paying members and two hundred others subscribed to our Information list. All are people interested in psychoanalysis in China and most are actively engaged in providing services to people in China. Most American, Australian and Canadian CAPA members are APsaA and IPA members. More than 20 CAPA members have visited China; lectured, supervised and provided consultations and assisted in Earthquake relief. Two CAPA members, (Elise Snyder and Ubaldo Leli) visit for extended periods about once a year. There are more than 80 dues-paying Chinese CAPA members
What We Hope To Do
Chinese interest in psychoanalysis is intense. We hope that after several classes have graduated from our two-year psychotherapy training programs, the Chinese graduates will become the teachers and the Americans will back out. We hope that an American institute will then begin full psychoanalytic training in China.
